![]() Nine times out of ten it's highly compressed media in there anyway, something a professional would avoid using at all costs, partially because it's likely unlicensed, partially because they can source the media from higher quality sources (like original archive masters). There's just no reason to support MKV in a professional editor. The companies that develop editing software like Premiere, Final Cut and Media Composer have connections with MPEG and SMPTE to ensure that as time wears on their needs are made known to those organizations, and as such they aren't left out in the cold all of a sudden without any representation. They have a vested interest in maintaining long-term compatibility and are not constrained by the same sets of design philosophies that many open source projects are. These groups' whole purpose is to develop technology and software designed to fit various needs in audio/video production, distribution, and storage. In contrast the MP4 container is maintained by the Motion Picture Experts Group (AKA: MPEG not to be confused with the Motion Picture Editors Guild) and MXF is maintained by Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (AKA: SMPTE). In the future certain features might be depreciated that aren't used by the community in general, but are heavily utilized by editors (like SMPTE timecode for example). Or someone could fork the code and create a divergent standard, which developers would have to decide to support or not. The developers could decide to haul off next year and radically redesign the container in such a way that breaks compatibility. And being open source there's no guarantees about its future.
